Komax Plant Introduces Innovative Digitally Controlled Metal Shot Peening System for Aviation

Shot peening complex improves corrosion resistance and fatigue strength of parts

The Komax plant near Moscow has introduced an innovative robotic complex for shot peening of metal products, including those for the aviation industry.

The system is equipped with two automatic units that allow simultaneous two-sided processing of parts, which increases productivity eightfold compared to traditional methods. The positioning accuracy of the workpiece reaches 0.1 cm thanks to an advanced guidance system.

Shot peening technology, unlike standard cleaning, enhances surface compressive stress, increasing corrosion resistance and fatigue strength of parts. This is critical for metal structures operating under high loads, such as components of aircraft engines or power equipment.

The development is not just an automated system, but an "intelligent ecosystem." The complex analyzes 3D models or CNC program data, independently calculating the nozzle movement path and regulating the supply of abrasive material. If there is no digital model, the operator uses a training mode: sets control points manually, and the robots memorize the algorithm for further autonomous operation.

The project was implemented as part of the automation program of the Komax plant. The company's immediate plans include the integration of machine vision and specialized software, which will allow achieving full autonomy of processes.

The introduction of the Komax plant's robotic complex reduces the processing time of parts, minimizes the risk of defects and increases the durability of products. This is especially important for the aviation, automotive and energy industries, where the reliability of components directly affects safety. The technology also reduces dependence on the human factor, optimizing costs and increasing the competitiveness of domestic production.
