Станут менее прожорливыми: раскрыто влияние модернизации двигателя ПД-14 на темпы выпуска самолетов МС-21

Aviation expert Panteleev called the process of continuous improvement of aircraft engines absolutely normal

The PD-14 aircraft engine for the domestic MC-21 airliner received a Rosaviatsiya certificate back in 2018, but work on its testing is still ongoing. The need to refine the power plant will become a normal phenomenon, since such power plants are modernized throughout their life cycle, this will not affect the aircraft production, said aviation expert Oleg Panteleev.

The safety of its standard design has been confirmed by the aviation authorities of Russia and it is allowed for commercial operation. Thus, the current work on the PD-14 does not directly affect the timing of the certification tests of the MC-21-310 aircraft.

According to him, the refinement of the design of aircraft or engines can continue for a very long time. And this is a completely normal process, since the life cycle of modern technically complex products is designed for decades, and during this time new technologies and materials may appear that can be implemented.

Panteleev also compared the technical characteristics of the PD-14 and the Pratt&Whitney engine, on which the MC-21 aircraft was originally supposed to fly. In terms of specific fuel consumption, the PD-14 was supposed to lag behind Pratt&Whitney by 2-3%, but in terms of maintenance labor intensity and total operating costs, the domestic engine should win.

Only the start of commercial flights can confirm these promises of the developers. In general, it must be admitted that against the background of problems with PW engines faced by airlines around the world, our developers literally crossed themselves when they realized what difficulties the American sanctions had averted them from.
Oleg Panteleev, aviation expert

Earlier it became known that the Ministry of Industry and Trade allocated 14 billion rubles to improve the parameters of the Russian PD-14 engine for the MC-21 aircraft. The engine needs to be made more fuel-efficient, lighter and less noisy.
