Artificial Intelligence Used to Train Cosmonauts at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center

AI is already advising cosmonauts on the ISS when there is no prompt response from Earth

The Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center is starting to use artificial intelligence (AI) in the training process. This was announced by Denis Matveev, a Russian cosmonaut.

We are starting to implement AI, but these are only trial steps so far.

Matveev noted that the general space training program for cosmonaut candidates already has a section on artificial intelligence. The neural network allows processing large amounts of data and highlighting the necessary information. Also, cosmonauts take many photographs of the Earth's surface, but there are difficulties with their geographical referencing. In such cases, AI assistance can be used to process photographs and decipher them.

Igor Koreshev, Head of the International Activities Coordination Department at the CTC, said that the center is constantly developing and implementing new technologies.

Given the communication delay with Earth, they need an assistant who can always advise the cosmonaut in some emergency situation when it is not possible to get a direct answer from Earth.

Currently, the scientific department is developing a system to help cosmonauts on the Moon and Mars.
