Terahertz Radiation Helps Russian Scientists Find a Way to Speed Up Data Transfer

Innovative materials showed low energy consumption in data recording and resistance to interference

Scientists from Lomonosov Moscow State University have developed a new way to control the characteristics of materials used in electronic devices. The method is based on the use of terahertz radiation and can significantly increase the speed of data transmission in electronic devices. This is reported by the press service of the university.

Scientists from the Department of General Physics and Wave Processes of the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University have demonstrated a method for controlling the symmetry of a cadmium sulfide (CdS) crystal using terahertz radiation, which can be used to create fast and energy-efficient memory based on magnetic materials

Magnetic straintronics technology helped scientists not only reduce energy consumption for data recording and increase noise immunity, but also allowed them to adjust fast switching.

However, the physical contact between the piezoelectric element and the magnetic material, which limits the signal transmission speed, prevents the spread of new materials. The researchers proposed an alternative approach, which consists of abandoning the piezoelectric element in favor of terahertz radiation.

A cadmium sulfide crystal was chosen as a model object for the presentation of the new technology.

This approach for a cadmium sulfide crystal was used for the first time in this work. The efficiency of harmonic generation turned out to be an order of magnitude higher than in previous studies.
