New method for protecting buildings from collapse developed at VyatSU

A mathematical model created by scientists increases the stability of structures: costs and complexity are minimal

Scientists from Vyatka State University (VyatSU) have presented an innovative method for protecting buildings from progressive collapse. It is based on a mathematical model.

The authors of the method believe that their approach is highly economical and can be applied during the reconstruction of both industrial and public facilities. It is based on the modernization of connections between beams and columns.

The scientists' method allows predicting what will happen to the beams in a building in case of damage. Under normal conditions, they bend under load. However, if part of the beam is damaged, it may begin to sag significantly and work differently — in tension, like a stretched string.

We have figured out how to incorporate the possibility of transformation into the structure and predict it.

Existing recommendations for protecting buildings from destruction involve significant changes in their design, such as strengthening connectivity and static determinacy. VyatSU scientists have proposed an alternative and simpler method for modernizing steel frame joints.

The authors are confident that, due to the low metal consumption and ease of implementation, their solutions will be more economical compared to traditional methods.
