Russian military personnel have begun using IMR-3M obstacle clearing vehicles as assault tanks. Initially developed for sapper work, the equipment has proven itself well on the battlefield thanks to its strong armor, according to military analyst Dmitry Kornev.
The analyst clarified that the telescopic crane-manipulator is removed from the equipment during the assault. The vehicle is capable of leveling almost any non-capital buildings to the ground and making passages in the walls of brick or panel houses.
All these qualities allow the IMR-3M to clear the way for equipment or assault groups in urban conditions. The vehicle is more mobile and less susceptible to damage compared to a conventional tank, which has a rotating turret and a long gun that is easily damaged. The IMR-3M can go head-on, destroying obstacles in its path.
The press service of Uralvagonzavod (part of the Rostec State Corporation) added that specialists have already worked out the possibility of equipping the IMR-3M with an electronic warfare system and additional anti-drone protection.
