The Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) monitored the Russian diesel-electric submarine (DES) B-261 "Novorossiysk" of project 636.3 "Varshavyanka" and its accompanying corvette "Boyky" of project 20380 in the North Sea.
The operation took place on January 10. "Novorossiysk" and "Boyky" were traveling through the exclusive economic zone of the Netherlands — a territory through which they are allowed to transit in accordance with international law.
"Novorossiysk" was heading from the Mediterranean to the northern waters, and "Boyky" joined the submarine during its passage through the North Sea. To monitor them, the Netherlands Navy sent the patrol ship Zr.Ms. Friesland and the naval combat helicopter NH90.
The "Kalibr-PL" cruise missile carrier, the diesel-electric submarine "Novorossiysk", is the first of six submarines of project 636.3. They are distinguished by their silent operation and ability to remain undetected.
The corvette "Boyky" is designed for anti-submarine and anti-aircraft warfare. The ship is equipped with advanced sonar and radar systems, as well as the "Uran" complex with Kh-35U missiles and the A-190 artillery system.
Earlier www1.ru reported that a nuclear reactor was launched on the cruiser "Admiral Nakhimov", which has been under repair since 1999.
