St. Petersburg has become the first city in Russia to introduce unmanned robotic platforms at the airport to speed up operations. The latest domestic "Piranha" autonomous rovers with domestic software have appeared in Pulkovo. They can work around the clock with breaks for recharging every 8 hours. These rovers are capable of towing up to 500 kg of cargo, or carrying up to 300 kg of cargo on themselves.
According to the airport's press service, the "Piranhas", under the control of an operator, have been assigned to transport oversized baggage and baggage for passengers with reduced mobility, as well as to provide transportation in the baggage handling service. The advanced modern operator workstation interface allows one person to work with several rovers simultaneously.
In real time, the operator can track information from each of them about routes, tasks performed, as well as telemetry and video stream from onboard cameras. After about six months of training, the "Piranhas" will become independent and autonomous, and an operator will not be needed. Then they will take over navigation functions and help passengers navigate the terminal.
If necessary, the Piranha rover at the airport will be able to perform a number of specific tasks not directly related to the transportation of goods and assistance to passengers. It can also be equipped with special equipment: for example, a rotating camera with an additional thermal imaging module, acoustic cameras, radars, and gas analyzers. The rover can operate at temperatures from -25°C to +40°C.
