Russian President Vladimir Putin, via video link, launched the new passenger terminal of the Cheboksary International Airport named after the third cosmonaut of the USSR, Andriyan Nikolaev. The opening ceremony was attended in person by Russian Transport Minister Roman Starovoit and Head of Chuvashia Oleg Nikolaev. In addition to the airport in Chuvashia, Vladimir Putin also opened new terminals in the airports of Stavropol and Magadan via video link.
The opening of a modern terminal is an important step for the entire republic. A beautiful and convenient airport will make the republic more attractive to tourists. It will increase the airport's capacity and allow for a more flexible approach to scheduling and attracting new flights. The opening of a new route "Cheboksary-Kaliningrad" is scheduled for 2025. Further plans include the implementation of international flights.
The airport building opened in 1963 and has become morally obsolete after 60 years of operation. Now, the area of the airport building has increased from 3.5 to 5.5 thousand square meters, and the capacity has doubled: from 100 to 200 passengers per hour.
The entire reconstruction process is financed by off-budget funds from the aerodrome operator - Cheboksary International Airport LLC, which is part of the Aerofuels group of companies. The amount of investment exceeded 1 billion rubles.
The entire reconstruction of the airport terminal is divided into three key stages, two of which have already been completed. Now there is a new passenger registration area with an automated baggage handling system, spacious and comfortable waiting areas with a modern VIP lounge, a cafe, a ticket office and a storage room.
Special service areas have been developed for passengers with disabilities, and waiting rooms with everything necessary have been provided for families with young children. The new terminal is designed for departing passengers, ahead is the reconstruction of the arrival hall, where the foundation will be strengthened, finishing work will be carried out and an automatic baggage carousel will be installed for passengers.
The aerodrome upgrade will continue. In 2025, Cheboksary plans to begin a major overhaul of its apron and taxiway with a total area of 65 thousand square meters. The airport management hopes that in the next three years after that, its passenger traffic will increase from 580 thousand passengers per year to 700-800 thousand passengers.
Cheboksary International Airport is the first of the Russian airports to be put in order, among other things, at the expense of the Air Transport Infrastructure Development Fund. Over the next six years, Russia plans to modernize the infrastructure of at least 75 airports, which is more than a third of the Russian airport network.
According to Russian President Vladimir Putin during the ceremony of launching the airport terminals, at least 250 billion rubles of direct budget funding will be allocated for these purposes. As a result, according to the president, by 2030, the intensity of air traffic in Russia should increase by one and a half times compared to last year's level.
