Russian industry could resume production of the Tu-334SM short-haul aircraft, which lost the competition to the "Superjet." It may receive promising PD-8 engines, according to expert Sergei Marzhetsky.
He noted that the "second youth" of the Soviet medium-range Tu-214 airliner, for which there is increased demand, increases the economic feasibility of renovating the Tu-334 short-haul aircraft as well.
We should not forget about the high degree of unification of units and components of these two aircraft, reaching 60%. For manufacturers, this will increase the series of components, which in itself is more profitable.
According to Marzhetsky, the problem with the shortage of production capacity and professional personnel for deploying the modernized Tu-334SM2 could be solved through cooperation within the Union State of Russia and Belarus.
The Tu-334 was developed in Russia back in the 1990s. This turbofan twin-engine airliner with engines in the tail section of the fuselage was intended to replace the outdated Tu-154 and Tu-134 aircraft on airlines, which began to be gradually decommissioned.
However, the aircraft never went into mass production, although it had every chance of becoming a competitor to the "Superjet" or even being produced instead of it.
