Comet C/2024 S1 Rapidly Gaining Brightness and "Growing" a Tail Before Encountering the Sun

It will be at its closest distance to the star on October 28

Comet C/2024 S1 (ATLAS) will approach the Sun at its closest distance on October 28. After that, it will become visible in the sky in Russia and other countries of the Northern Hemisphere.

It is now rapidly gaining brightness and "growing" a tail. We are watching it.
Leonid Elenin, astronomer, researcher at the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences

On the night of Sunday, the comet was spotted using the LASCO C3 space coronagraph. At that time, it was visible that it was rapidly losing brightness, which could indicate the destruction of its nucleus due to its proximity to the Sun.

The uniqueness of this comet lies in the fact that at the moment of perihelion passage on October 28, it may become so bright that it can be seen even in daylight. Its brightness at this moment may reach minus fifth magnitude.

In the event of a favorable development of events and the preservation of the comet's integrity, it will shine even brighter than Venus. The celestial body approached the Earth at its closest distance on October 23 and 24, and on the 28th, ATLAS will pass through perihelion at a distance of only 500 thousand kilometers from the Sun.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that the Orionids meteor shower reached its peak activity on the night of October 21. The autumn meteor shower was "accompanied" by Jupiter. Its bright glow was noticeable to the right — west and above the constellation Orion.
