External management for JSC MCST, which develops Russian Elbrus processors, was confirmed to Vedomosti by both the Ministry of Industry and Trade and sources close to the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the IT industry.
The decision on external management was made, according to the press service of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, "to ensure the stabilization of the company and the preservation of the Elbrus processor architecture" after MCST failed to fulfill the state defense order. The exact nature of the failure is not specified: it could be either the disruption of R&D or other tasks.
Management is being transferred to another microelectronics developer, JSC SPC ELVIS, which is considered one of the leading microcircuit design centers. It is noteworthy that this does not imply the transfer of ownership of shares or stocks to other persons. ELVIS only receives powers related to the management of MCST, which will help guarantee "prompt and uninterrupted execution of the state defense order".
In Russia, a number of motherboards are now being produced with the installation of Russian-made Elbrus processors for dozens of types of domestic equipment. Elbrus processors can be found in ATMs and microcomputers, and they are actively used where cybersecurity needs to be ensured — at critical information infrastructure facilities, large enterprises, and in law enforcement agencies.
