A New Milestone in Economics: Russia to Lease Small Floating Nuclear Power Plants to Other Countries

The unit is designed to generate energy in remote regions

Russia will have the opportunity to lease floating units of the atomic thermoelectric power station for heat supply (ATST) type "Elena-AM" to other countries, according to Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute."

The creation of a floating nuclear power plant in Russia, especially a small one, is very important. It can be used to launch new services on the market. For example, if you put an "Elena-AM" station on a floating platform, you can lease it to any country - you don't have to sell it.
Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute"

It is worth noting that the small nuclear power plant "Elena-AM" is being developed by the NRC "Kurchatov Institute" on behalf of Rosatom. It is designed to generate electrical and thermal energy in remote and inaccessible regions, such as Siberia and the Arctic. It is planned that such units will be able to provide energy to territories deprived of traditional infrastructure.

You can launch these platforms along rivers - the Ob, the Yenisei. You can't get there: there are no roads, no electricity. Thanks to a small-capacity "floating unit", you can come and develop coastal areas.
Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute"

The first unit is planned to be commissioned by 2032. The nuclear power plant will be autonomous and will not require external power supply. The nominal thermal power of the reactor is 7 MW, the electrical power is at least 200 kW. The expected service life of the unit on a single fuel load is 40 years.

Earlier www1.ru reported that Russia is preparing new floating power units for the Far North - how project 20871 is progressing.
