Blast radius — 230 meters, but inaccurate: The first use of the FAB-3000 "Tsar Bomb" with UMPC was spotted online

High-explosive bombs of this power with UMPC were used for the first time

The Russian military has used the FAB-3000 aerial bomb for the first time, equipped with a universal planning and correction module (UMPC) with a reinforced design of power units and an increased area of the folding wing to ensure an acceptable planning range, IA TASS reported, citing a source in law enforcement agencies.

A video of the FAB-3000 hitting the target was published on the Fighterbomber Telegram channel. The published footage shows that the projectile deviated from the selected aiming point by about 10 meters, which, according to the author of the channel, is a very good result. This is the first time such ammunition has been used in history.

It is known from open sources that the potential blast radius of the FAB-3000 is 230 m, while its fragments retain their killing power up to 1240 m.

Colossal damage, but accuracy is needed

Military expert Alexei Leonkov noted that the FAB-3000 can be used when storming heavily fortified areas. According to him, modern technologies will allow these bombs to be turned into a high-precision projectile that will accurately fit into the target with minimal circular probable deviation.

However, there is also an opinion that the FAB-3000 is a redundant projectile for the Russian Aerospace Forces due to its large weight.

Of course, increasing the power by several times does not increase the affected area by several times. Accuracy is still needed. A lone FAB-3000 falling 20 meters from the bridge will cause the same damage to it as a FAB-500. The Su-34 will have to carry two 3000-ton bombs under its wings, and with them it will be no different from the Tu-22 in terms of maneuverability.

What is known about the characteristics of the FAB-3000

The FAB-3000 high-explosive aerial bomb was developed and manufactured back in the USSR. Its total weight is 3067 kilograms. Of these, 1600 kilograms are accounted for by the body, and the explosive charge weighs 1387 kilograms. Thus, this bomb carries 1.2 tons of explosives.

The projectile is designed to destroy fortified industrial facilities, various types of structures and shelters.

These can include bunkers, road and railway bridges, dugouts, and fortified underground passages. Due to its solid destructive power, the projectile has been nicknamed the "Tsar Bomb" in some media.

The FAB-3000 flight is planned and adjustable. Such bombs can fly for tens of kilometers. At the same time, the enemy's air defense cannot shoot them down. The carriers of three-ton bombs can be the Su-34 front-line bomber or the Tu-22M2 operational-tactical bomber.

Now the aircraft will only need to drop the bomb a few tens of kilometers before the enemy's air defense zone, after which the ammunition will be able to glide to the target on folding wings, which, after separation from the carrier aircraft, open and allow the ammunition to fly up to 70 km. The course correction of the UMPC FAB-3000 will be carried out using satellite and inertial navigation systems.
