Appearance of Su-30, Su-35 and MiG-31 of the Russian Aerospace Forces near the borders of Latvia's airspace caused a lot of noise in NATO

Hungary Today: Hungarian Air Force used SAAB JAS 39 Gripen fighters to intercept Russian aircraft

Multipurpose Su-30, Su-35 fighters and two MiG-31 interceptors of the Russian Aerospace Forces approached the airspace of Latvia. The incident occurred on September 25, Hungary Today writes with reference to a message from the NATO Joint Aviation Command.

In response, two SAAB JAS 39 Gripen fighters of the Hungarian Air Force took off from the Šiauliai airbase in Lithuania. The pilots detected five Russian aircraft west of the coast of Latvia.

The author of Hungary Today claims that the flight of Russian fighters and interceptors did not comply with international rules, so they were "expelled." "After successfully completing the task, the Gripen aircraft returned to their base in Lithuania," the publicist added.

Hungary demonstrates the Alliance's commitment to protecting and ensuring the security of the Baltic States and the eastern flank.

Hungary has been participating in the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission to patrol the airspace of the Baltic countries since August 1, 2025. Four SAAB JAS 39 Gripen and 80 military personnel are stationed at the Šiauliai airbase.

This is not the first time that Hungarian Gripens have taken to the air in search of Russian aircraft in the Baltic States. This happened earlier on August 8. The Russian Aerospace Forces fighters were flying with their transponders turned off, and they were intercepted over the Baltic Sea.
