The Russian Armed Forces have likely lost more than 4,000 tanks. This was written by military expert Peter Suciu in an article for The National Interest, citing data from open sources.
Suciu did not rule out that the stated figure is highly overestimated. However, he referred to the statement of the head of the US European Command, Christopher Cavoli, who spoke in the US Senate and agreed with this assessment.
The Russians have lost more than 4,000 tanks, which is almost the number of combat units in the US tank corps.
Independent researchers from the ORYX group, who analyze data from open sources, also did not find about 4,000 tanks in Russia.
Their calculations were based on photos and videos posted online.
The Russian Ministry of Defense did not name the exact number of tanks in service with the Russian Armed Forces. At the same time, many experts believe that the country has the largest fleet of armored vehicles compared to NATO member states, which is regularly replenished.
Over the past few years, Russia has increased the production of new and modernized Soviet tanks. The main production is налажен at two enterprises: UralVagonZavod (UVZ) (Nizhny Tagil) and Omsk Transport Machine-Building Plant (Omskttransmash). UVZ produces T-72, T-90 tanks and their modifications, and T-80s roll off the assembly line in Omsk.
