The Russian Armed Forces received a batch of T-90M and T-72BM main battle tanks with the Arena-M active protection system (APS). Both combat vehicles are equipped with enhanced slat armor to protect against drones and electronic warfare antennas. This is according to The Military Watch Magazine.
The Arena-M's onboard radar automatically monitors airborne threats, and when a target is detected, it transmits information to a computer that selects the type of ammunition to protect the tank.
Arena-M can intercept missiles, guided munitions and high-explosive anti-tank projectiles.
Previously, Russian tanks were only equipped with the Shtora-1 electronic-optical active protection system. The system warned the crew of a threat and helped to disguise it.
Russia lags significantly behind Korea, China and Israel in terms of integrating active protection systems, but has quickly taken steps to counter drones.
The publication claims that "UVZ is the only one of the five major Soviet tank plants that operated in the 1980s that still produces tanks. It is possibly the largest tank plant in the world."
According to The Military Watch Magazine, Russia produced about 130 tanks per year until 2022. Now production reaches more than 200 tanks per year. Some experts say that Russian factories produce even more combat vehicles of this type.
