Russia is betting on the development of a nuclear submarine fleet. Significant funds are directed to the creation of submarines of the "Borei-A" and "Yasen-M" projects. However, are these submarines worth so much money? Military expert Peter Suchiu writes about this in an article for The National Interest.
From 2020 to 2024, the Russian Navy included four strategic submarines of the "Borei-A" project and four multi-purpose submarines of the "Yasen-M" project. It is planned to spend 8.4 trillion rubles on the construction of new warships over the next ten years.
Is $100 billion enough to produce "Boreis" and "Yasens"? Russia's budget for the development of the Navy for the next decade will barely exceed the UK's annual defense spending and will amount to 40% of what the US plans to spend on defense in 2025.
Suchiu pointed out that American entrepreneur Elon Musk "has the spare cash to outspend the Kremlin if he wanted to, but he is intent on going to Mars rather than building a few expensive warships."
Russia only became a great power after Tsar Peter I laid the foundation for a modern fleet. But the Russian Navy will never surpass the US Navy, Suchiu concluded.
