Russian BMP-3M infantry fighting vehicles have insufficient protection in the side projection of the 43-mm aluminum armor plate ABT-102 against monoblock and tandem shaped-charge warheads with penetration of more than 450 mm. Lattice anti-cumulative screens with additional 10-mm armor plates are not able to solve the problem, noted military analyst Evgeny Damantsev.
According to him, after a projectile with a penetration of more than 450 mm hits, a full defocusing of the shaped-charge jet does not occur. It overcomes the ABT-102 plate, penetrates the behind-armor space, and initiates the detonation of the ammunition.
Therefore, the side projection can only be reliably covered by elements of dynamic protection (DZ) "Kaktus" or elements of DZ "Relikt".
The BMP-3M is designed to transport personnel to the front line, increase the armament, mobility and protection of military personnel on the battlefield.
