Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become one of the key elements of military equipment in recent years. The combination of artificial intelligence (AI) with advanced drone technologies provides the military with unique opportunities to perform various tasks with high efficiency and minimal risk to personnel.
The Russian Ministry of Defense noted that the use of AI in drones allows the "birds" to perform a wide range of tasks, such as reconnaissance and surveillance, logistics and delivery, autonomous navigation and piloting.
"KUB"
The Russian army is armed with the "KUB" drone from the Kalashnikov concern. It is capable of independently finding and destroying targets. The use of AI allows the drone to quickly analyze the situation and choose the best targets to attack.
"KUB" is designed to engage group and single armored targets in the tactical depth of the enemy. The projectile is guided to the target using specified coordinates.
Tactical and technical characteristics of "KUB":
- Operating flight altitude — from 150 to 1000 m
- Speed — up to 130 km/h
- Application range — up to 25 km
MQ-9 Reaper
Another of the most famous AI-powered UAVs is the American reconnaissance aircraft MQ-9 Reaper. Thanks to the integration of the neural network, Reaper is able to independently perform long flights, analyze data from sensors and cameras.
It is equipped with a turboprop engine that allows it to reach speeds of over 400 km/h. The practical ceiling is 15 240 m. The maximum flight duration of the MQ-9 Reaper is 24 hours.
Tactical and technical characteristics of the MQ-9 Reaper drone:
- Dimensions: length — 11 m,
- Wingspan — 20 m
- Flight range — up to 1850 km
- Payload — up to 1700 kg
RQ-4 Global Hawk
The top 3 is closed by the RQ-4 Global Hawk, produced by the same USA. It is equipped with AI systems that allow it to perform autonomous missions lasting up to 30 hours, collect and analyze data over large areas.
Tactical and technical characteristics of the Global Hawk:
- Length – 13.53 m
- Wingspan – 35.42m
- Wing area – 50.10 m²
- Own weight – 5148 kg
- Payload – 12133 kg
Examples of the KUB, MQ-9 Reaper and RQ-4 Global Hawk drones demonstrate the potential of AI in improving the autonomy, efficiency and accuracy of military tasks. In the future, we can expect further development of this technology, which will lead to the creation of even more advanced and versatile systems for performing a wide range of military operations.
