Algeria is ready to conclude a deal with Russia for the purchase of fifth-generation Su-57 fighters. This was reported by Bulgarian Military, citing experts from «Russian weapons».
A high-ranking Russian government delegation is heading to Algeria. The likely agenda includes: the conclusion of an agreement on military-technical cooperation, or the signing of contracts for the supply of advanced weapons, as well as discussion of the implementation of the terms of the contract for the supply of fifth-generation Su-57 fighters.
If the deal is approved, Algeria will become the third operator of the Su-57 after Russia and China. According to the author of Bulgarian Military, Algeria is one of Russia's important military partners, second only to India in terms of procurement volume.
The authorities planned to purchase about 14 Su-57 fighters. Currently, the Algerian Air Force is armed with Su-30MKA, MiG-29, and Su-24.
Why does Algeria need the Su-57?
Algeria views this deal as a strategic move to counter Morocco. The neighboring state is modernizing its Air Force, replenishing its fleet with F-16C/D Block 72 fighters acquired from the United States.
Algeria is also interested in the Su-35 as a more affordable alternative. The fourth-generation fighters have an advanced engine, radar, and outperform the Su-30MKA.
The author did not rule out that Algeria is considering the purchase of the Yak-130M combat trainer aircraft. This could diversify the country's Air Force fleet.
About the Su-57
The Su-57 fighter is «the pinnacle of Russian aviation technology». The aircraft has a small effective scattering area, which ensures stealth.
The Su-57 is equipped with the N036 Belka radar system, an advanced phased array antenna that provides long-range detection and tracking of air and ground targets.
The Su-57 carries a wide range of ammunition, including high-precision bombs, air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles.
