The most effective of the main battle tanks of the Russian army, the T-90M, received the active protection system "Arena-M". The equipment uses radar to continuously monitor the space, and when it detects an incoming projectile, it automatically tracks and destroys it, writes The Military Watch Magazine.
The most well-known system of this kind is the Israeli Trophy, which was integrated into Merkava IV tanks in 2008.
"Arena-M" can intercept missiles, high-explosive anti-tank projectiles flying at speeds up to 1000 m/s at a distance of 50 meters. As The Military Watch Magazine writes, "Western developers are lagging behind Russia" in implementing such systems in Abrams tanks, Leopard 2 and Challenger 2.
Both the US and Germany have asked Israel for help in integrating the Trophy active protection system into their own tanks to help reduce their vulnerability.
The T-80UM-1 tank with "Arena" protection was first publicly demonstrated at an arms and equipment exhibition in Omsk in the fall of 1997. Its creators were engineers from KBP (Kolomna) and KBM (Kolomna).
