Driverless transport will be introduced in experimental mode in several more regions of the country, in addition to Moscow and St. Petersburg. This was stated by the head of the Russian Ministry of Transport, Andrey Nikitin.
We will try to do this in 5-6 more constituent entities. And there we will build a sufficient base. And then we will apply this throughout the country.
In September 2025, Moscow launched the first regular service of a driverless tram with passengers in Russia. The 71-911EM "Lvyonok" model operates on route No. 10 Metro Shchukinskaya — Kulakova Street.
Features of the driverless tram:
- Does not exceed speed, follows traffic light signals
- Stops independently, opens/closes doors
- Gives way to pedestrians
- Strictly follows the schedule
The software for the tram was developed by specialists from the Moscow Metro. The smart technology works more stably than imported analogues. Currently, 4 autonomous trams operate in the capital. By the end of 2026, their number will increase to 15.
In January 2026, the first driverless metro train in Russia was launched in the capital's metro. Tests of the "Moscow-2024" train are conducted without passengers; a driver is in the cabin to monitor the train's movement but does not interfere with the intelligent system's operation.
