Ural AI to Drive Trams: Sverdlovsk Region Joins Experiment on Driverless Rail Transport

The Ministry of Transport is officially expanding the testing area for driverless trams. According to the draft government decree, the Sverdlovsk Region will receive an experimental legal regime for testing driverless rail transport. The main condition is that a test driver will be in the cabin to monitor the software.

The technical base is already ready. A tram based on the 71-911EM "Lvyonok" model operates in Yekaterinburg. Governor Denis Pasler stated that artificial intelligence recognizes obstacles and automatically stops the train 7–10 meters before an obstruction. A fully digitized depot has been built in Verkhnyaya Pyshma, where the machine undergoes all maintenance stages without human involvement.

The experiment also covers other regions. According to "Kommersant", the Nizhny Novgorod Region will receive a similar permit. Four driverless "Vityaz" trams are already operating in Moscow, and there will be 15 by the end of the year, and 400 by 2030. St. Petersburg has not yet launched any trains.

The Ministry of Transport is simultaneously preparing a law on fully driverless transport – it will be submitted to the government by July 1.
