Russian Railways has started testing biometric boarding for passengers on Sapsan high-speed electric trains. This was announced by Anton Petrov, head of the High-Speed Communication Directorate of OAO RZD, at a conference call in St. Petersburg.

At the first stage, we will test face recognition technology on a focus group. The launch of the service for all Sapsan train passengers is planned for 2027.

The focus group included employees of RZD, the Center for Biometric Technologies (operator of the Unified Biometric System, EBS), the Russian Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media, and journalists.

Testing is necessary to refine the speed of processing passenger biometric data, considering the high load on the Moscow-St. Petersburg route. The average occupancy of electric trains on this route exceeds 90%, explained the national carrier's press service.

Currently, biometric boarding is available to passengers of Lastochka trains operating on 5 routes from Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod. Russians who have confirmed their account on Gosuslugi and registered biometric data in the EBS can use the service. However, each passenger must carry the passport used to purchase the ticket, RZD concluded.
