The "ODK-Aviadvigatel" enterprise has developed lightweight blades for the PD-14 engine – without compromising strength and without abandoning titanium. This was reported by the press service of the parent corporation – ODK.

This refers to a wide-chord fan blade. It has a hollow structure inside, so with comparable strength, the weight of the part was reduced by almost half. Each PD-14 has 18 such titanium blades installed.

Diffusion welding and superplastic forming played a key role. The technology allows connecting structural elements and forming complex internal geometry that cannot be obtained by conventional metal processing methods.

The effect extends far beyond a single part: reducing the weight of the fan lightens the entire engine and helps reduce aircraft fuel consumption.

The publication "Aviatsiya Rossii" clarified that for the PD-14, monocrystalline blades with 2nd generation thermal barrier coatings and a low-emission combustion chamber made of intermetallic alloy were also developed.
