An-2 and the new "Baikal" belong to the same class of aircraft, but it would be wrong to present LMS-901 as a direct replacement for the Soviet biplane. Ekaterina Zgirovskaya, a representative of the Ural Civil Aviation Plant (UZGA), explained the differences between these two aircraft.
According to her, the An-2 can indeed be considered the predecessor of the "Baikal". However, we are talking about an aircraft of the same class, created with modern requirements and technologies in mind.
I really like to give this example with phones: there was a button phone, it made calls, sent SMS and had a flashlight. It performed the main function - communication. Now people use smartphones. This does not mean that some smartphone was created to replace a button phone, they can perform certain tasks simultaneously in the same way. It's just technological development.
Recall that "Baikal" is intended to close the deficit of light aircraft on local routes, where outdated "corn-dusters" are still used. However, the main question remains its cost, which may be unaffordable for regional airlines.
Aviation expert Roman Gusarov explained to "Pervy Tekhnichesky" that "Baikal" against the background of An-2 looks like a brand new Lada next to ancient "Zhiguli".
