Ледостойкая самодвижущаяся платформа «Северный полюс» продемонстрировала надёжность, пройдя осмотр без остановки экспедиции

The vessel of project 00903 continues autonomous drift as part of the "North Pole-42" expedition

The ice-resistant self-propelled platform "North Pole" has successfully passed a remote interim survey by the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping. Inspectors from the Murmansk branch of the RS carried out the inspection without interrupting the vessel's current expedition, which confirmed the technical readiness and reliability of the unique research platform.

Currently, the ISP is involved in the "North Pole-42" program, which started in October 2024. The expedition aims to comprehensively study climate changes in the Arctic over an annual cycle using complex measurements in the atmosphere, sea ice, and ocean. It is also planned to verify and refine forecasts related to global climate processes.

The "North Pole" platform, built at the Admiralty Shipyards USC under project 00903 of the Vympel Design Bureau, is the only vessel in the world capable of operating year-round in the high latitudes of the Arctic and drifting autonomously for up to two years.

The ISP has the functionality of a full-fledged scientific center: it houses 15 laboratories, as well as equipment for creating research sites on the ice. The vessel is capable of operating independently in ice without the help of an icebreaker and receiving heavy helicopters such as the Mi-8 AMT (Mi-17). It is designed for conducting geological, geophysical, acoustic, oceanographic, and other studies, including tasks to ensure the safety of navigation on the Northern Sea Route.

Technical characteristics of the vessel of project 00903:

  • length — 83.1 m;
  • width — 22.5 m;
  • displacement — about 10390 tons;
  • power of the power plant — 4200 kW;
  • speed — at least 10 knots;
  • hull strength — Arc8;
  • autonomy in terms of fuel reserves — about 2 years;
  • service life — at least 25 years;
  • crew — 14 people;
  • scientific staff — 34 people.

Earlier www1.ru reported that ISP "North Pole" started operating 100 km from the center of the Arctic.
