The government of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug (KhMAO) has come up with an initiative to change the type of work on the modernization of the Khanty-Mansiysk airport from major repairs to a full-scale reconstruction worth 8.5 billion rubles. This was announced at a meeting of the Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy by the Deputy Governor of the region, Azat Islaev.
He specified that the project needs to be implemented to ensure the landing of new Russian aircraft MC-21 and Tu-214. Islaev recalled that the existing runway (runway) does not meet the requirements for receiving new Russian aircraft MC-21 and Tu-214.
The existing runway does not have the bearing capacity and will not allow the take-off and landing of this type of aircraft.
Earlier, 3.2 billion rubles were already provided for the overhaul of the airport for 2026–2028, including 1 billion rubles of federal funds.
It should be noted that there is no information on the serial deliveries of Tu-214 and MC-21-310 yet. The Kazan Aviation Plant's aircraft does not even have specific production plans, and Irkutsk is conducting experimental flights of the new aircraft before certification.
