Residents of Udmurtia voted 14,849 times for the airport name

Izhevsk Airport will be named after the famous small arms designer Mikhail Kalashnikov. This decision was the result of a public vote in which more than 70,000 residents of Udmurtia took part.

In addition to Kalashnikov, the names of composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky and the founder of the Izhevsk Arms Factory, Andrei Deryabin, were considered. 14,849 people voted for the legendary designer, he received 44.76% of the votes. The head of the republic, Alexander Brechalov, said that the voting results will be sent to the Public Chamber of Russia for approval.

The construction of the new airport terminal complex began in the spring of 2023. The terminal will be two-story, with an area of about 10.7 thousand square meters, with a capacity of 440 passengers per hour. It will serve both domestic and international flights. The opening of the new complex is scheduled for the second half of September 2025.

International flights will begin to be served in December 2025. Mikhail Kalashnikov, born on November 10, 1919 and died in December 2013, became famous for creating the famous assault rifle that bears his name.
