Earth continues to be in the flow of disturbed plasma emanating from a coronal hole on the Sun. The solar wind speed in recent hours has remained at 600–700 km/s, which is approximately twice the usual rate. This was reported by specialists from the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The planet's magnetic field is held in the "yellow" disturbance zone and has not yet reached the threshold of a magnetic storm. At the same time, the plasma temperature in near-Earth space rose to 500 thousand degrees per day.
Scientists estimate the probability of magnetic storms on August 20 at 65%. The predicted level of geomagnetic disturbances corresponds to the G1–G2 range, that is, no higher than the second level on a five-point scale. Experts estimate the chance of more serious events at only 5%.
