The first concrete backfilling complex (CBFC) in the country has started operating in Chukotka. The project, worth 5.2 billion rubles, has been implemented since 2021. Its goal is to transition from a chamber to a layer mining system, which increases the efficiency and safety of operations.
The new technology uses a mixture of tailings from the processing plant and barren rock. The composition is 45% recycled materials. The mixture is pumped into the worked-out mine spaces, creating a solid foundation for further work. This reduces the burden on the ecosystem and reduces the amount of waste on the surface.
The Governor of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug noted that the development of the mining industry is a key area for the region. The launch of the CBFC will strengthen the district's position as a mineral resource cluster. The complex is equipped with its own boiler house with a capacity of 5.22 MW, operating on local coal. This reduces dependence on external suppliers and supports the local economy.
According to Vitaly Savchenko, Deputy General Director of Polymetal, the system is already operating stably. The company is considering introducing the technology at other deposits.
