New three-dimensional structures will help restore muscles after serious injuries

Scientists at NUST MISIS have created bioequivalents of muscle tissue that can help restore muscles after serious injuries and be used for drug testing.

Currently, large muscle injuries are treated with transplantation of the patient's own tissues, but this is limited due to the lack of donor material and risks to the donor. The new approach is based on growing three-dimensional cellular structures — spheroids — inside biocompatible polymers that support the growth of muscle cells and tissue formation.

Bioequivalents will allow the creation of individual implants and reduce the need for donor tissues. This method is a step towards personalized medicine and accelerated drug testing without animal testing.

The new technology can significantly improve recovery after severe injuries and increase the safety and effectiveness of drugs, which is important for millions of patients.
