Large-scale forest fires have broken out near the Russian-Turkish Akkuyu nuclear power plant under construction in the Mersin province of Turkey. Since early morning, Russian aviation has been involved in extinguishing the fire, including Be-200 amphibious aircraft and Mi-8 helicopters.
According to the press service of Akkuyu Nuclear, the fire occurred in the Bahchederesi area, approximately 45 kilometers from the station. The company emphasizes that the fire posed no threat to the NPP facilities, and work at the construction site continues as normal.
The fire occurred about 7 km north of the Tashucu village. Our fire service promptly joined the work and participated in localizing the fire. A tanker, three water carriers, and 36 firefighters were sent to the scene.
The extinguishing efforts were complicated by strong winds and drought, but thanks to the coordinated work with local firefighters and forestry services, the fire was localized. Currently, municipal services continue to eliminate small pockets of fire.
Sergey Butskikh, CEO of JSC Akkuyu Nuclear, noted that the construction site's fire department is an important element of safety in hot climates. The NPP is reliably protected from fires.
