Fate of MiG-29 Hangs in the Balance: Peru Buys Gripen E/F Fighters

The South American republic operates six Soviet combat aircraft

Peruvian authorities have decided to purchase 24 JAS39 Gripen E/F fighters. The deal is estimated at approximately $3.5 billion, according to the country's president, Dina Boluarte.

The fighters are already in service with Brazil, and Colombia may also become an operator.

In this light, the question arises about the future of the Peruvian army's fighter fleet, which is also represented by six Soviet-made MiG-29 fighters.

MiG-29 is a fourth-generation multirole front-line supersonic fighter developed by OKB MiG. The main task of the aircraft is to provide local air superiority with the use of medium-range missiles.

The MiG-29 is the "calling card" of the USSR during the Cold War, the aircraft features an integral layout and a helmet-mounted targeting system. The fighters were exported to more than twenty countries.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that half-century-old T-62 tanks have returned to the Russian army.
