MC-21 and SJ-100 May Become 400 kg Heavier?: What Aircraft Painting Entails

The paint must be lightweight, heat-resistant, and UV-resistant

Painting an aircraft is not just a change of livery, but a full-fledged engineering and technological operation. The cost of the work depends on the type of aircraft, the complexity of the design, and the number of paint layers.

For example, painting a Boeing 747 costs up to 300 thousand dollars, and an Airbus A320 costs up to 100 thousand. The cost includes - washing off the old paint (if any), preparation and cleaning of the surface, priming, painting, applying the livery, drying, sealing and inspection.

Full painting adds an average of 250–400 kg to the weight of the aircraft. Therefore, some airlines partially sand the fuselage down to aluminum to reduce weight.

At the same time, the paint must be lightweight, heat-resistant and resistant to ultraviolet radiation. The whole procedure takes 5–14 days, on average one aircraft takes 200–500 liters of paint.

Earlier www1.ru reported that 46 billion rubles will be allocated for the production of Il-76.
