Russian Supersonic Airliner to Have Mesh Structure of Wing and Fuselage

This approach will reduce the weight of the aircraft

The project of the Russian prospective supersonic passenger airliner includes a mesh structure of the wing and fuselage. This was announced by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Scientific Director of TsAGI Sergey Chernyshev.

According to him, this approach allows to compact the mesh in places where there are more loads, and to make it less frequent where they are insignificant.

This reduces the weight of the aircraft, which largely determines its efficiency.
Sergey Chernyshev, Head of TsAGI

Chernyshev noted that bio-inspired technologies are now being introduced in many industries. The same is happening in aircraft construction.

For example, bionic mesh structures are replacing the traditional power frame — longitudinal stringers and transverse frames. Their structure is similar to the structure of tissues in plants or animals.

At the stage of modeling and testing, specialists obtained positive results. The development of the project will bring aviation materials science to a new level. In this component, the Russian design school is a world leader.
