The design of the Russian prospective supersonic passenger airliner incorporates a mesh structure for the wing and fuselage, according to Sergei Chernyshev, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Scientific Director of TsAGI.
According to him, this approach allows for densifying the mesh in areas with higher loads and making it sparser where the loads are insignificant.
This reduces the weight of the aircraft, which largely determines its efficiency.
Chernyshev noted that bio-inspired technologies are now being implemented in many industries. The same is happening in aircraft construction.
For example, bionic mesh structures are replacing the traditional power frame – longitudinal stringers and transverse frames. Their structure is similar to the structure of tissues in plants or animals.
At the modeling and testing stage, specialists obtained positive results. The development of the project will bring aviation materials science to a new level. The Russian design school is a world leader in this component.
