Russian Supersonic Airliner to Feature Mesh Structure for Wing and Fuselage

This approach will reduce the aircraft's weight

The design of Russia's prospective supersonic passenger airliner incorporates a mesh structure for the wing and fuselage, according to Sergey Chernyshev, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Scientific Director of TsAGI.

According to him, this approach allows for densifying the mesh in areas with higher loads and making it sparser where loads are insignificant.

This reduces the weight of the aircraft, which largely determines its efficiency.
Sergey Chernyshev, Head of TsAGI

Chernyshev noted that biomimetic technologies are currently being implemented in many industries. The same is happening in aircraft construction.

For example, bionic mesh structures are replacing the traditional силовому каркасу — longitudinal stringers and transverse frames. Their structure is similar to the tissue structure of plants or animals.

At the modeling and testing stage, specialists obtained positive results. The development of the project will bring aviation materials science to a new level. The Russian design school is a world leader in this component.
