Российским майнерам придется туго: умные счетчики электроэнергии научили выявлять добытчиков криптовалюты

Method Accuracy Reached 98%

At the South Ural State University (SUSU), an innovative solution has been proposed to address the problem of illegal cryptocurrency mining (where consumers connect powerful equipment to the power grid under the guise of ordinary residents). The developed methodology for forecasting electricity consumption and a smart meter based on it allow identifying such miners and warning energy sales companies. This was announced by Saidzhon Tavarov, Candidate of Technical Sciences.

Cryptocurrency miners from among the negligent sign contracts with energy sales companies as ordinary household consumers, but in fact, they connect equipment with a load of up to 200 kW to the grids. We have proposed a solution to the problem by developing a new methodology, also embedding this methodology into smart meters, improved at SUSU.

Tavarov noted that traditional methods of calculating electricity consumption are oriented towards average indicators and do not take into account the real behavior of consumers. This leads to a systematic overestimation of regulatory values and creates serious imbalances in the operation of power grids.

The new methodology does not require lengthy measurements and takes into account key factors affecting electricity consumption. These factors include the location of housing relative to sea level, the socio-economic status of the family, the specifics of the use of appliances, the variability of weather conditions, and seasonal temperature fluctuations.

The developed methodology and new meters have been successfully tested.

Nine cities in the Chelyabinsk region participated in the experiment. The energy sales organization provided us with data on residential buildings, the accuracy of the methodology was 98%. Smart meters, in which it is embedded, are currently in operation in Tajikistan.
