Russia has created the world's first microstent for the surgical treatment of glaucoma, which is implanted directly into the eye tissue. This was announced by the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Gennady Krasnikov, speaking at the general meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.
The unique development was created by specialists from the M. M. Krasnov Research Institute of Eye Diseases. The new microstent is made of a shape-memory material, which allows it to straighten from a compressed state after being implanted into the eye and maintain the outflow of intraocular fluid. This helps prevent increased intraocular pressure - one of the key factors in the progression of glaucoma.
Glaucoma is a progressive and currently incurable disease that leads to the destruction of optic nerve fibers. In Russia alone, about 1.5 million people suffer from it. The creation of such a microstent is an important step in the fight against this socially significant disease.
