Specialists at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) have developed "HydroCom," a digital system for voice communication underwater. The device solves the problem of communication at depths up to 30 meters and distances up to 1 km, which is critical for divers, rescuers, and the military.
The system uses a throat microphone that captures vibrations of the vocal cords, and bone conduction headphones for sound transmission. The signal is processed by a neural network, which removes noise and converts the data into understandable speech. Communication between users is carried out through hydroacoustic channels, and up to 25 people can be connected to the network. Unlike full-face masks, "HydroCom" is compatible with any equipment and does not restrict movement.
Existing solutions, such as smart gloves or applications with acoustic transmission, have limitations: low gesture recognition accuracy, shallow operating depth (up to 10 meters), and short battery life (about 4 hours). The Russian development provides clear communication even in murky water and supports up to 20 commands, with plans to expand functionality. According to project manager Dmitry Zatekin, neural network processing guarantees compatibility with any diving equipment.
The system is being tested with the participation of professionals, including veterans of special forces units. The cost of the prototype is estimated at 200 thousand rubles — comparable to a full set of equipment. The developers are working to reduce the price by optimizing production and attracting investment. By 2026, it is planned to increase the list of supported commands and improve signal stability in strong currents.
For professionals — rescuers, underwater operators, military personnel — reliable communication is vital. "HydroCom" increases the safety and efficiency of underwater work, reducing the risk of errors due to incorrect gestures or poor visibility. The technology also opens the way for creating integrated systems for underwater robotics and ocean research.
