Scientists at the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences are testing virtual reality (VR) glasses for use on the prospective Russian Orbital Station (ROS). The development will help cosmonauts not to feel lonely in space far from their family and friends.
According to psychologist Oleg Ryumin, VR technology has already proven its effectiveness in the long-term isolation experiment SIRIUS. It is very useful in conditions of prolonged isolation and simulates terrestrial conditions.
VR technologies will be relevant not only for the ROS, but also for interplanetary flights, where cosmonauts will experience a lack of information and isolation from loved ones.
With this technology, we could create an external visual environment for the cosmonaut, simulating many terrestrial conditions. Using these glasses, a person can, for example, find themselves on the seashore or on their country plot, watch their children swinging on a swing, and virtually feel the effect of their presence.
Ryumin emphasized that VR will provide significant psychological support to cosmonauts in conditions of intense work.
