The construction of the second start-up complex of the Pilot Demonstration Center (PDC) for spent nuclear fuel (SNF) processing has been completed in Zheleznogorsk. This was reported in the press service of Rosatom State Corporation.
The PDC operates on the basis of FSUE "Mining and Chemical Combine". According to Vasily Tinin, Director for State Policy in the Field of Radioactive Waste of Rosatom State Corporation, the processing of SNF with the closure of the fuel cycle meets safety principles.
Today, the PDC is the only large-scale and universal platform in the world for improving technologies that allow turning spent nuclear fuel into a new resource.
The first start-up complex was launched in 2015. The second complex will allow processing nuclear fuel on an industrial scale.
It is expected that nuclear scientists will stop the accumulation and disposal of radioactive waste. Nuclear energy will actually become renewable.
