New Russian oil production technology allows faster drilling of wells up to 4 km

The system for constructing and tracking the trajectory of horizontal well drilling using telemetry transmits data to the surface in real time

Scientists from Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have developed a new system for constructing and tracking the trajectory of horizontal well drilling using telemetry. The navigation system for wells has already been patented, tested and is ready for use: PNRPU has concluded a cooperation agreement with the company "Perm Complexes of Navigation and Rotor Controlled Systems".

The system can operate accurately and safely in a well with a diameter of up to 20 cm and at a depth of up to 3-4 km. The coordinates of the bottomhole are entered into it, and a trajectory to the target is laid along critical points. During the drilling process, a device with a fiber optic gyroscope follows the specified route exactly, collects information inside the formation and transmits it in real time to the drilling crew. If there is a deviation from the trajectory or another abnormal situation, a signal is sent to the surface, which allows the drilling crew to change the route.

The Perm scientists were helped to develop the system by the strategic academic leadership program "Priority 2030".
