The "Transport" Group of the Aluminum Association (Association of Aluminum Producers, Suppliers, and Consumers) presented a new domestic development: a super-light aluminum-scandium alloy for civilian vessels.

It is noted that the aluminum-scandium alloy 1581 has many advantages over the aluminum-magnesium alloys traditionally used in Russian civilian shipbuilding.

These include:

•  increased strength and increased fatigue life of the vessel, which scandium alloying gives to the aluminum alloy;
• the ability to reduce the thickness of the hull walls and reduce the weight of the vessel. If the vessel weighs less than 200 kg, it may not be registered with the State Inspectorate for Small Vessels (GIMS of the Ministry of Emergency Situations);
• reduced fuel consumption by the vessel due to its lighter weight;
• greater maneuverability of the vessel made of the new alloy;
  
• reduction of operating costs of a vessel made of aluminum-scandium alloy by at least 10%;
• increased by at least 20% the strength of the welded joint of the hull of such vessels;
  
• the ability to use a less powerful engine. 

Earlier in June, scientists from the Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals of the Siberian Federal University presented a new aluminum-magnesium alloy with the addition of scandium, from which high-strength wire is obtained. It can be used in automotive, shipbuilding, rocket production, and the production of materials for aircraft of various purposes.
