Scientists from Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have found a method to optimize the electric motor inside a bionic prosthesis. This was reported in the press service of the university.
Modern bionic prostheses use ready-made electric motors. Scientists from PNRPU decided to optimize their operation — this will reduce the likelihood of failure, eliminate mechanical noise, reduce the weight of the structure and simplify the operation of the prosthesis.
Experts plan to replace existing rotating motors with linear and spherical analogues.
We have formed our own version of the location of the proposed motors in the prosthesis body: cylindrical and linear motors are supposed to be used for the movement of four fingers, and spherical ones – for the hand and thumb. Then we performed calculations and presented a diagram of the layout of the electric drive of the prosthesis.
In today's control systems for bionic prostheses, linear actuators (electric drive) are used to ensure the mobility of the fingers. Scientists carried out calculations, determined the power parameters, and calculated the power based on the capacity of the proposed battery. It is about 1500 mAh on modern models.
The current consumption parameters of the future bionic prosthesis system were determined. For finger mobility — 0.4 A, for wrists — 0.8 A, for simultaneous operation of both motors — 4.48 A. With these calculations, the capacity of a standard battery will last for approximately 1200 full cycles of movement.
It was important for us to show that replacing the currently used motors is advisable only if the new motors have either obvious advantages with the prospect of becoming a full-fledged replacement, or partial advantages, becoming an alternative, but also a promising solution. According to the research, the proposed option can claim to meet these requirements.
The developers noted that the new method can be used not only in prosthetics, but also for the operation of manipulators of android robots.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that Perm scientists created a bionic ear prosthesis.
