Tupolev Production Will Have to Be Accelerated Several Times Over

The contract with S7 could drastically change the pace of Tu-214 production

Negotiations with the airline S7 regarding the supply of 100 modernized Tu-214s are moving into a practical phase. The start of the program is being discussed from 2029, with plans to seriously rework the aircraft to meet the requirements of airlines.

"The First Technical" has calculated what pace the industry will require and how much it differs from current capabilities.

The aircraft will be modified to suit the economics of airlines

This is not about returning to the old version of the Tu-214. The project includes adapting the resource, reducing operating costs, and transitioning to a crew of two.

Eliminating the flight engineer is a key step. This decision brings the aircraft closer to modern airliners in terms of economics and reduces the burden on the carrier.

The parameters of the deal are not yet known, but if we distribute the standard 100 aircraft over 10 years, it comes out to about 10 machines per year. That's roughly one Tu-214 every five weeks — a pace that looks realistic only on paper.

KAZ is currently operating in a different mode

Production is handled by the Kazan Aviation Plant. The current pace is about one aircraft per year. To reach the level under the S7 contract, production will have to be accelerated at least tenfold. For the industry, this is a leap of magnitude.

At the same time, the transition to a two-member crew will require new avionics and cabin redesign. In parallel, the resource will have to be recalculated and the characteristics confirmed.

In fact, this is a deep modernization that will require testing and may affect the launch dates.

The difficulty of the task is almost impossible

Even with a ready-made aircraft, the key problem is to ensure a stable flow of components. To reach 10 aircraft per year, it is necessary to scale up cooperation, expand capacity, and recruit personnel. There is currently no such base for a serial pace.

Aviation expert Andrey Patrakov noted that increasing capacity is not an easy task, and the absence of serial Tu-214s proves this.

Serial operation of import-substituted Tu-214s has not yet begun, which means that not everything has been completed yet.

According to calculations, the project looks feasible. But in practice, this is a scenario with a high burden on the entire industry. Deliveries from 2029 are possible only with a rapid increase in production now and the absence of serious disruptions.
