SJ-100 and MC-21 Interiors: Russia Restores Production of Cabins That Withstand 16 g and Bullet Impacts

The interior of the aircraft turned out to be a real art

From the outside, it seems that the interior of an aircraft is just panels, seats, and shelves. But in reality, a modern cabin is a real combat complex, where every detail undergoes tests that ordinary furniture can only dream of, the press service of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC, part of Rostec Group) said.

The Kazan-based company "Aviation Interiors," together with domestic manufacturers, has restored the production of a complete set of cabins for SSJ-100 and MC-21, completely replacing imported components.

Will Withstand Even a Hippopotamus

All materials are tested for fire resistance, toxicity, and durability. Shelves and seats withstand extreme loads: the MC-21 luggage rack holds up to 2 tons, business class seats - overload up to 16 g, UAC noted.

That is, the seat must withstand the weight of an adult male hippopotamus and maintain its integrity, even if the cabin floor is deformed.

Import substitution became critical after the refusal of foreign integrators in 2022. Now, domestic companies themselves design and assemble the "monuments" of the cabin: kitchens, toilets, wardrobes, panels, and seats. Economy class seats, lighting, water-vacuum systems, and oxygen blocks are all Russian.

When Extra Kilograms Are Critical

The development process was a real test. Each element undergoes certification and integration with the aircraft fuselage, taking into account strict restrictions on weight and loads. Any extra kilograms can destroy the economics of air transportation and safety.

The first set of panels for the SSJ-100 was installed in December 2024, and in August 2025, a complete set was sent to the second production aircraft. For the MC-21, the pilot assembly showed that domestic elements are not inferior to foreign ones, and in terms of installation, they are even simpler.

Independent of External Sentiments

The return of interior production allows Russia to ensure the safety of passengers and crew, reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, and create a base for the serial production of modern airliners with comfortable and durable cabins. Now the Russian aircraft is completely "its own" from wings to seats.
