The newest small-sized 5.45 mm AM-17 assault rifle from the "Kalashnikov" concern could replace the outdated AKS-74U (a shortened version of the AKS-74 assault rifle), which are in service in many post-Soviet countries. This opinion was expressed by military expert Brandon J. Weichert in an article for The National Interest.
In 2025, the concern planned to increase the production of AM-17, which caused a great stir among analysts. Experts believe that the new assault rifle has the potential to improve the tactical operations of Russian military personnel and security forces.
The engineers at "Kalashnikov" drew inspiration from earlier designs. In the AM-17, they used new materials that reduced weight and maintained the weapon's strength.
According to Weichert, the main advantage of the AM-17 is its compact design. The assault rifle is perfect for operations where maneuverability is important.
Characteristics of the newest AM-17:
- Cartridge - 5.45x393 mm
- Magazine capacity - 30 rounds
- Rate of fire - 850 rounds per minute
- Weight of the rifle without magazine - 2.5 kg
- Length of the rifle in the stowed position - 490 mm
- Length of the rifle in the firing position - 750 mm
The AM-17, chambered for the standard 5.45×39 mm cartridge, is compatible with all types of ammunition used in the Russian army, ensuring seamless integration into existing supply chains.
The expert stated that the AM-17 would be an excellent choice for assault troops, artillerymen, pilots, and combat vehicle crews. The assault rifle could also be used by Rosgvardia (National Guard) personnel, he added.
The AM-17 is a synthesis of tradition and innovation, adapted to the demands of modern conflicts. It will increase the combat effectiveness of Russian military personnel and could change global standards for compact weapons.
