Military Expert Weichert: Kalashnikov's Weapon Could Change Global Standards for Compact Rifles

The newest small-sized 5.45 mm AM-17 assault rifle from the Kalashnikov concern could replace the outdated AKS-74U (a shortened version of the AKS-74 assault rifle), which are in service in many post-Soviet countries. This opinion was expressed by military expert Brandon J. Weichert in an article for The National Interest.

In 2025, the concern planned to increase the production of AM-17, which caused a great stir among analysts. Experts believe that the new assault rifle has the potential to improve the tactical operations of Russian military personnel and security forces.

Kalashnikov engineers drew inspiration from earlier designs. In the AM-17, they used new materials that reduced weight and maintained the weapon's strength.

According to Weichert, the main advantage of the AM-17 is its compact design. The assault rifle is perfect for operations where maneuverability is important.

The expert stated that the AM-17 would be an excellent choice for assault troops, artillerymen, pilots, and combat vehicle crews. The assault rifle could also be used by Rosgvardia employees, he added.

The AM-17 is a synthesis of tradition and innovation, an assault rifle adapted to the requirements of modern conflicts. It will increase the combat effectiveness of Russian military personnel and may change global standards for compact weapons.
