Army Recognition: Russia Transfers First Pantsir-S1 SAM System to North Korea

North Korea May Create Its Own Missile-Gun System Based on It

North Korea has received its first Russian-made Pantsir-S1 ground-based self-propelled anti-aircraft missile and gun system. This was reported by Army Recognition, citing a report from the UN Panel of Experts on sanctions against North Korea.

North Korea also received advanced electronic warfare (EW) equipment. Russian specialists helped their North Korean colleagues modernize the guidance and targeting systems of ballistic missiles. This marks a turning point in the strategic defense partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang.

The Pantsir-S1 is designed to combat a wide range of aerial threats, including drones, helicopters, low-flying aircraft, and cruise missiles. The deployment of the Russian SAM system will enhance North Korea's ability to protect critical targets from air attacks.

Previously, the North Korean Armed Forces relied on outdated Soviet systems, including Strela, S-75 Dvina, and S-200 Angara. These are less effective at intercepting high-precision munitions and fifth-generation aircraft.

Given North Korea's reverse engineering capabilities, the Pantsir-S1 could serve as the basis for the development of its own SAM systems.

Russian officials have not reported on the delivery of the Pantsir-S1 to North Korea. However, since June 2024, a Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has been in effect between the two countries.
