The freight locomotive 2TE28 has gained the ability to go beyond its primary purpose: BMZ has sent a new version of the locomotive with an electro-pneumatic brake for certification tests.

After confirming compliance with TR CU requirements, this configuration will allow 2TE28 and 3TE28 to be used not only for freight but also for passenger trains with cars without autonomous power supply and heating systems.
The key change affected the braking system. The electro-pneumatic brake transmits control commands via an electrical signal, which allows for faster and more precise control of train braking compared to a purely pneumatic scheme.
For passenger trains, the presence of an electro-pneumatic brake is of fundamental importance, so its installation expands the scope of application of the two-section 2TE28.
After the completion of tests, BMZ will be able to mass-produce 2TE28 and 3TE28 in two versions: with an electro-pneumatic brake or with a basic system. The choice of configuration will remain with the customer.
For the locomotive itself, this means not so much a change in traction capabilities as an expansion of the range of tasks it can perform on the railway.
The 3TE28 has been produced by the Bryansk Machine-Building Plant since 2023 and is one of the most powerful domestic mainline diesel locomotives with a Russian diesel engine.
The platform provides for both three-section and two-section designs, so the installation of new braking equipment extends additional capabilities to both versions of the family.
